Texture, Texture and Texture!

Today is all about texture! If we were paid for every time we used the word texture…well, let’s just say there would be more company trips to the Caribbean! As designers we are constantly looking at the texture in a room, the furniture, flooring and even artwork. It plays such an important part in our lives, sometimes we don’t even realized it. There are varying contrasts in texture that each individual has a different preference to: glossy/matte, smooth/rough, soft/hard.

One of the best places to find texture is in nature. We reflect it in our homes in ways that bring the outdoors in, like wood flooring and greenery. Our post here on how to find color inspirational can help you figure out which textures you are drawn to. Don’t be afraid of touches like cane back chairs and concrete planters to bring the outdoors in.

When shopping for items, whether in store or online, a great way to mix textures is with tone. If the couch you fell in love with at your local store and the rug you found online have similar tones, the textures are sure to play off each other beautifully. Items like artwork, pillows, vases and ottomans can add character and detail to your space. Blending these textures adds depth to even monochromatic styles.

Feel. Touch. Hold. Everything we come in contact with on a daily basis is touched by us. In your home your feet touch the floor. How do you like it to feel? Cold tile in the bathroom or warm carpet going up the stairs? When you grab for a pillow on the couch, do you prefer velvet with a cotton filler or a down-filled linen one? The little (and big!) touches in our homes make all the difference. In winter time, at least here in Michigan, we change out our blankets for something more soft and plush. Summer evokes bright colors and airy fabrics. Now that you’ve read this, how have you noticed texture playing a role in your home?
